Symphony
(For a New World Order)
This work for full symphony orchestra is now complete.  The overall piece is inspired by current
global events, and it is therefore no coincidence that it evokes memories of music composed
during the Second World War.  Quentin would like to acknowledge the help of the Dacorum
Symphony Orchestra in giving feedback on the piece prior to completion.
This begins in a complex time signature of 15/8, which should be
interpreted as alternating bars of 9/8 and 6/8.  The overall effect
gives this section a distinctive lilt.  Time signature shifts and quirky
harmonic developments make the piece challenging but accessible
and dramatic.
A slow movement which uses some material previously included in
another work.  The movement builds to a climax, where soaring strings
push the boundaries of tonality to give an early 20th Century feel.
The overall impression is that of caravan approaching from the distance
and passing by.  However, military motifs and conflicting themes clash
with ringing discords.  This movement could be subtitled “The Road to
Baghdad”.
The final movement tentatively explores themes from Mvt 1 through a
sequence of key changes before modulating to an ebullient C major.  The
excitement of the relative major key does not prevail, and the mood shifts
back to A minor for a brooding and sinister dramatic conclusion.  The
outlook for a New World Order is not one of optimism.
